HI! So you want to go ice skating in Munich. Then I have a few wonderful recommendations for you! The top hotspots are: The Nymphenburger Schlosskanal, ice skating at Karlsplatz, as well as the popular Olympia Eissportzentrum.
Ice skating and curling on the Nymphenburg Schlosskanal
When the temperatures in Munich allow it and the ice layer from the Nymphenburg Schlosskanal is thick enough, the saying goes, “Winter jacket on and go ice skating”.
If the weather conditions are good, you can hire skates here, drink mulled wine, whose spicy, cinnamon-sweet aroma can be smelled all over the Schlossplatz, enjoy various drinks and a selection of delicious snacks at the stand. For a small, rather symbolic price you can skate all day long.
Ice skating at night
When it gets dark, the floodlights are switched on at the castle and provide an incredible skating experience until 10 pm.
The special thing about the Nymphenburg Castle Canal.
The place at the castle is especially popular at night. This place alone, creates exciting moments with your loved ones or with friends. In addition, you can not only go skating here, but also join in a duel of curling. The people of Munich are very open and friendly here.
So when the winter time is approaching, be sure to check out the Schlosskanal.
How do I get to the Nymphenburg Schlosskanal?
The best way to get to the castle canal from the main station is to take the U1 underground line in the direction of the Olympia shopping centre to Gern. From there you walk along Waisenhausstraße directly to the canal. Once you reach the canal, you can either ice skate to Nymphenburger Schloss or walk along the canal. The walk takes about 15 minutes.
Ice skating at Karlsplatz – in the middle of Munich
You like shopping? But somehow you are also attracted to ice skating? Then why not combine the two! Shopping during the day and going skating in the evening. In the same place!
Outdoor skating at the Stachus
Munich’s largest open-air ice arena attracts 300,000 visitors every year, of whom around 70,000 venture out onto the 750 square metres of ice rink every year.
What makes skating on Karlslatz so special?
There is actually only one thing to say about it. The scenery of the ice rink in the evening. Everything here is full of colourful lights, the atmosphere is pleasant, the people are in a good mood and the music suits the occasion. By the way, the mulled wine of course tastes great and lightens the mood. One thing is for sure, ice skating on the Stachus is a must in Munich’s wintertime!
Watch out! Motto days for ice skating!
In the evening from 19:30h the daily motto ice skating days take place.
- Mondays: traditional costume on ice
- Tuesdays: Students Night
- Wednesday: Alpine party
- Thursdays: Business on ice
- Fridays: House and Blackbeat
- Saturdays: Saturday Night
- Sundays: Two for One
Costume on ice
If you wear a dirndl or leather trousers on Mondays, you do not pay admission from 19:30 hrs on that day. The best Oktoberfest hits are playing in the background.
Students night
On Tuesday everyone is invited to the Students Night. As a little special, every skater gets a free long drink.
Alpine party
At the alpine pasture party every skater gets a free portion of Kaiserschmarn after the sport. I wouldn’t miss that!
House and Blackbeat
House and Blackbeats fans are especially happy on Fridays. Here they dance and groove until 22:00 o’clock.
Opening hours and season
From 20 November to 17 January you can get started here. The ice rink is open daily from 10:30 to 22:00. However, I recommend going to the evening hours. Although there is more action and you might have to wait longer, but this is the only way to feel the magical ice fascination on the Stachus.
How do I get to Karlsplatz?
From the main station, simply take the U4/U5 in the direction of Arabellapark to Karlsplatz. Without a footpath you are directly on the spot.
So, these are my best outdoor recommendations. But you can also go skating indoors.
Ice skating at the Olympia Eissportzentrum
In the Olympia Eisstadion you can skate in all seasons. So if the coming winter is not cold enough or comes too late, this is your place to go.
Opening hours of the Olympia Eisstadion
The opening hours vary according to the season. The current opening hours can be found on the homepage.
Disco evening programmes
Regular evening programmes with music and light shows await you in the stadium.
These take place regularly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. On Thursday the latest world hits are played, on Friday the current charts and on Saturday oldies heat up the hall. IMPORTANT! Before you plan your trip, make sure you check the opening hours on the website. The Olympia Eisstadion is home to the EHC 1970, the EC Hedos, the Munich Barons and the EHC Red Bull Munich. It is therefore quite possible that an ice hockey game is taking place at that very moment.
Maybe you’ll be lucky and get a ticket on the spur of the moment. But I wouldn’t count on that. It’s best to watch the teams’ playing seasons. Either on the homepage of the Olympic ice stadium or on the homepage of the respective teams. The EHC Red Bull Munich has its match schedule separately on their homepage.
Final Thoughts
Munich offers a lot of places to go for pleasure in winter. Ice skating is one of them, and a particularly beautiful one, because it connects so many people. I really hope I could give you a little insight into Munich’s ice world with this article. Thanks for reading it.
